Story Behind the Song

Jack tells the story of an outlaw who lies for the thrill of the chase, rather than money or fame. From El Paso to Galveston, he robs, runs, and narrowly escapes capture, savoring the adrenaline of being pursued. But his luck runs out when the Texas Rangers catch him in Waco. Now jailed, he looks back with regret, admitting he never wanted to hurt anyone — it was always about the excitement of running “the deadly race.”
